Sunday night anxiety before work happens because Sunday evening is the first moment in two days that the week becomes real, and there is still nothing you can do about it.
That is most of it. You are not broken and it is not a disorder in its own right. It is anticipation arriving several hours before anything can be acted on, which is the worst possible combination — full information, zero available action. Monday morning is easier than Sunday night for almost everybody, and that is not a coincidence. By Monday you are doing it. On Sunday you are only rehearsing it.
The bit worth paying attention to isn't the feeling. It's the timing
Nearly everything written about this treats the feeling as one thing to be managed. It is not one thing, and the difference between the two versions matters more than any technique.
If it arrives on Sunday evening, it is the transition. The gear change from unstructured to structured, from your own time to somebody else's. Unpleasant, normal, and it responds well to being given a shape.
If it has crept back to Sunday lunchtime, or Saturday, it is not the transition any more. Something that only needs a few hours to build does not need two days. When the feeling starts eating the weekend from the far end, it has stopped being about the handover and started being about what is on the other side of it.
That is the most useful thing on this page, and it costs nothing to track. The Creep moving earlier is information about your job, your workload or one specific person in it — not about your resilience on a Sunday. The difference between a feeling and a decision is the subject of Motivation Versus Discipline, and it applies here: no wind-down routine has ever fixed a Monday that genuinely should not be walked into, and the advice that treats it as a relaxation problem is quietly telling you the reverse.
The point of noticing is not to force a decision. It is to stop applying a small fix to a large thing and concluding you are bad at the small fix.
Three things worth doing
Move the Worry Appointment to Sunday afternoon. The Worry Appointment already lives in How to Stop Overthinking at Night — a fixed slot where the thinking is allowed to happen, so it stops turning up uninvited. The Sunday version differs in two ways worth naming. It is weekly rather than nightly, and unlike three in the morning it has a genuine object: there really is a week coming, and it really does have things in it.
So the slot is earlier and it is not for reassurance. Twenty minutes, mid-afternoon, on paper, while you can still do something with the answer. What is actually on Monday. What of it is decided already. What is one thing that would make Monday morning shorter. Then it is closed, and the evening is not a second sitting.
Decide Monday's first physical action, and only that. Not a plan for the week. The first physical thing — the email you open, the room you go to, the bag by the door. A week you have not begun is infinite and the mind will happily rehearse all of it. A first physical action is small enough to be true and specific enough to end the rehearsal, because there is nothing left to work out.
This is the bit most people skip because it seems too small to matter. The size is why it works.
Stop having the last hour on your phone. The Sunday evening scroll is a bad-faith deal: it looks like rest and it is a drip feed of everyone else's Monday, other people's weekends, and the news. You end the hour with more to think about than you started with, and less time to think about it in. Nothing else on this page will survive that hour, so it is worth moving first. If you want somewhere for the hour to go, walking is the one that reliably works on a Sunday.
Where this doesn't work
If the dread is about a job you have to keep for reasons that are not up for negotiation, none of the above changes the underlying facts. It makes Sunday shorter and it makes Monday start faster. It cannot make the week something else, and any page telling you otherwise is selling something.
If Sunday is bad because Monday means going back to something genuinely unsafe or unmanageable — a person, a workload nobody has ever agreed to look at — then the feeling is doing its job correctly and the answer is not on a website about mindset.
And if the flatness is not confined to Sunday at all — if most days have gone quiet, if things you used to like have stopped landing, if it has not lifted in weeks — that is a different thing and it is worth saying to a GP. Samaritans are free on 116 123, twenty-four hours, from any phone, and you do not have to be in crisis to call. Shout offer free text support: text SHOUT to 85258. I am not qualified in any of this. Those people are.
This is Pillar 04: Mindset
Watch the timing, not just the feeling. Give the thinking an appointment while you can still use the answer. Decide the first physical thing and let the rest of the week stay vague until it arrives.
The Sunday feeling is one of the few kinds of dread that comes with a built-in measuring instrument. Most worries do not tell you how serious they are. This one does, by where in the weekend it starts.
